Re: Question about mirrors

Hi Greg:

About a year ago I bought a pair of Vitaloni baby Tornado mirrors for my
'74 Spider from Car Custom, in Azusa, CA. Their part numbers are 4555
(left) and 4557 (right) @ $19.99 each. This price is about half what most
of 'Alfa' parts vendors charge, but Car Custom deals in VW parts, so
perhaps that's a clue. I got a real laugh when I was shopping for these,
and saw the exact mirrors selling for $100 each (and more) from some of the
Ferrari parts vendors for use on early 308's. Car Custom's phone is (626)
334-4951, or see their website at:

www.carcustom.com

I can't say for certain if these mirrors will cover the existing screw
holes from your old mirror, but on my car, which came only with a left
mirror as original, the new mirror fit well in the stock location. The
Vitaloni mounting system uses plastic anchors, similar to sheetrock wall
anchors, to hold the screws into the metal of the door. They will work
well if your original screw holes have become slightly enlarged from rust,
and also isolate the new screws from any further metal-to-metal
contact. The screws are covered by the mirror base when everything is in
place.

The Vitaloni mirrors won't win you any extra points at a Concours event,
but they certainly don't look too out of place on a '74, as Alfa used
similar mirrors (some black, painted body color, or chrome; some manually
adjusted, others powered) on Spiders beginning in the later 70's.
