Starting Question (74 Spider)

All:
I have had a strange thing that has started happening lately.
When I turn the key the starter engages and turns the engine a few time and
then stops.  If I release the key and reengage it, it does the same thing.
Of course it doesn't happen every time.
I feel it is the starter but I don't want to drop a couple of hundred and
it turns out to be something else.

Any suggestions?
