Jeff,

The problem you are describing can possibly be explained by something simple. 
 If the fanbelt which turns the alternator and water punp is allowed to 
become too loose, or has begun to loose traction due to age and/or weather 
conditions, slippage can become significant enough to prevent the alternator 
from generating adequate current to charge your battery while also supplying 
current to other electrical loads when the car is running.  Check the 
condition of the belt; ensure that oil has not spilled on the pulleys; check 
the tension on the belt's idler arm.

It's easy to always be looking for the sophisticated solution, but often I 
find myself relearning the lesson that is usually the small things that are 
amiss.
