Steve's trashed GTA motor

The collective wisdom of the Digest has given Steve good suggestions for
cleaning metallic trash out of his block and head, but no-one had mentioned
the need to eliminate the probably source of the stuff until Andrew Watry
wrote "I've read...that if you ever have a catastrophic engine failure,
always throw away the oil cooler, because it will have gotten metal bits in
it that there's no real way to get out."

Andrew has it right. Generic oil coolers suitable for an Alfa cost about
$30--cheap insurance. If Steve has an original GTA oil cooler and wants to
keep it, an option would be to leave the vintage cooler in place beside the
radiator to maintain the period look, but bypass it and plumb in a modern
cooler in an unobtrusive location.
