You're not missing anything. That is how the ashtray in my 78 spider was. what I did in to remove
the ashtray assembly from the center console and cut a hole through the metal seperating the light
from the ashtray. When the ashtray lid is slid back light is turned and the hole is exposed allowing
light to come through to the ashtray. The light should actually be fastened to the ashtray holder.

I'm not sure how the designer at AR actually planned for the light to get through the bracket. Maybe
he had planned to use "transparent aluminium" from Star Trek.
