Re: Let's assume I'm not a complete moron-for a minute

Ok, lets do a little reviewing here. You said you put a great effort in
working on this engine. Good for you. Most people would start to lose
ambition after the first few stages of a rebuild. My first question is, Did
you have the heads rebuilt? If so, were they trued by flycutting the face of
the head. ( Truing due to some minor warpage maybe?) It maybe that one one
head was trued up. ( rear bank only?) The reason that I mention this is that
if too much was shaved off the head the 10 or so thousandths removed will
lower the centerline of the cam toward the block. This will change the the
valve timing by a few degrees by moving the cam sprocket down the timing
belt. Either retarding or advancing depending on which way the cam rotation
is. The fix would be to find how much was removed and use a thicker head
gasket to compensate for the loss.
I had run into this problem before on a overhead cam 4 cyl, not of
Alfa make. I hope this gets you more focused on what might be your problem.
So far, it sounds like the culprit. Good luck and keep me posted.
