Milano forest fire?

My cousin's friend borrowed her Milano and then called
my cousin and told her that smoke started coming from
under the hood, and it smelled bad.  I went to look at
it, and found that the "bad" smell was similar to
burning paper or wood.  When I turned on the heater
fan, I heard something rattling around in the heater
box, and the smell got very strong.  I ran the fan
some more, and the the smell eventually went away. 
I'm thinking that some leaves got sucked into the
heater box and somehow got burnt.  Anyone had this
experience?  If it was indeed burnt leaves, what would
cause them to get hot enough to smolder?  Thanks.
