164 Fuel Hoses



I wanted to add my two cents to the 164 fuel rail hose discussion. While
the exposed fuel rail hoses above the injectors are easy to see and
replace, the 164 (at least the 12v versions, with 3 liter V6s) also have
two short pieces of hose connecting solid fuel lines which are hidden
against the firewall, and are very hard to see from above. If you've
replaced the visible hoses correctly and are still smelling fuel in the
engine bay, put the car up and take a look at these short hoses. It's a
pretty good bet that they're leaking or deteriorating if you have 80K+
miles on a 164.

It may also be a good idea to use fuel hose clamps (which have the loose
end coiled on the inside of the clamp) or a constant torque clamp (that
shouldn't crush the fuel hose) like:
