Re: Moly boxes & Dentax

Dana Loomis asks:

"I have been under the impression that the break point between Alfa gearboxs
with the old style moly synchros and those with the newer, non-moly type fell
between the 101 and 105 models, with all 105s having the later-type box. Just
recently, however, I was looking inside a 105 gearbox that had moly synchros
and was told that early 1600 105s (Duettos, etc) would have had these, and
require Shell Dentax, rather than modern gear lubes. Oh, bother. If anyone
knows with more certainty when the change took place, I'd be grateful to hear
about it."

A change (THE change?) took place aparently during the production run of the
Sprint GT and prior to the introduction of the Sprint G.T. Veloce, which
should put it sometime between 1963 and 1966 and prior to the introduction of
the Duetto, since both the Duetto and the Sprint G.T. Veloce were introduced
at Geneva in March 1966.

The 1600 G.T./G.T.C./G.T.A./G.T.Veloce parts book lists both 101 and 105
synchronizing rings and synchromesh sleeves (101.00.13.216.20 ring and
101.14.13.216.03 sleeve, 105.14.13.216.03 ring and 105.14.13.219.05 sleeve),
with corresponding 101 and 105 limiting strips and limiting quadrants.

The 105.14.13.216.03 ring and 105.14.13.219.05 sleeve and related parts are
shown for all 1300, 1600, 1750, and 2000 gearboxes in the #2235 Catalogo
Rapido covering all 105 tintops. The 1600 G.T./G.T.C./G.T.A./G.T.Veloce parts
book applications show both the 101 and 105 parts used on both the G.T. and
the G.T.C., the 101 parts (only) being used on the G.T.A., and the 105 parts
(only) being used on the G.T.Veloce, which seems to put the switch during the
pre-Veloce production run.

However the 1600 G.T./G.T.C./G.T.A./G.T.Veloce parts book differs with the
characterization of "old style moly synchros and those with the newer,
non-moly type". All of the 105 parts are listed there as (molybdenum) or (for
gearboxes with molybdenum synchronizing rings) with no parenthetical notations
on the 101 parts.
