Re: Milano Oil Cooler
Hi Zamani and Group:
Water sprayed on your Milano's oil cooler and radiator will certainly
absorb an amount of heat, but perhaps not for the reason you suspect, and
perhaps not by as much as you suspect. Much more heat (i.e. energy) will
be absorbed as the water changes state from liquid to vapor (i.e.
evaporation) than will be absorbed as the water changes from cold liquid to
warm liquid. And by much more, I'm talking about 540 times more. If you
use ice water in your reservoir, the water will be less likely to quickly
evaporate, and thus will absorb much less heat. This 'change of state'
phenomenon is what makes air conditioning and refrigeration possible, and
also makes those old-fashioned ice and salt ice cream freezers
work. (Numbers: 79.7 cal/g will convert ice to water, while 540 cal/g
will convert water to steam. Only 1 cal/g is required to raise water temp
by 1 degree C without the state change.) Can't say for certain what will
work best on your Milano, but in theory, I'd vote for the water spray at
ambient temperature. Remember that neither the oil cooler nor the radiator
will likely be operating at above the boiling point of water, so you don't
want to discourage quick evaporation by icing the water. Water does
evaporate at all temperatures, even frozen, because the rate of molecular
movement at a particular temperature is an average value. Some molecules
will always be moving faster or slower than that average (graphed as a
bell-shaped curve), and those moving faster are the most likely to change
their state to vapor.
