You can pull the engine..

Seriously, I know you have to yank the tranny to get at this damn switch in
the earlier cars, I thought they had made it more accessible in the later
ones.

One might be inclined to attempt to position a switch inside the center
console, such that movement of the shift lever into the reverse position
activates the backup lights.  I don't see why this switch has to be inside
the bellhousing.
