Spider Back-up light problem

The back-up lights stopped working on my '87 Spider. I'm sure it is a
problem with the switch- jiggling the shift lever while in reverse used to
sometimes bring them back to life- so I know that the wires, connectors,
grounds are good. It looks like the shop manual shows an easy procedure to
replace the switch- Step 1- remove transmission. Step 2- replace switch!

Anybody have any suggestions as to how to avoid Step 1!?
