water pump removal; pulley differences?

Sorry to belabor this topic, but Les mentioned that only one stud needed to
be removed to get the water pump off without removing the pulley.  I wonder
if there is a difference between 1750 and 2000 pulley diameters, or maybe
between US pulleys (which have the SPICA belt teeth) and all other pulleys?
I ask because I recently changed a 2000 pump, and could not for the life of
me get the pump out without removing three studs.   Maybe I didn't
worry/force/finesse it enough.
