re: white smoke - point of failure
The booster does not have brake fluid in it unless something else has failed.
In this case, the rear seal in the master cylinder would be the
culprit. Replace it first.
Replacing the booster may not be necessary - I have been using one for
years that had accumulated almost a quart of brake fluid before it starting
sucking it into the engine. Simply use the turkey baster (same one you
use to suck water or oil out of the spark plug wells) to suck the errant
brake fluid from the bottom of the booster while you have the master
cylinder off for replacement.
Now I'm sure someone will tell me how dangerous it is to drive with a brake
fluid contaminated booster......
