How do you properly identify relays?

I am trying to figure out how you figure what circuit is inside certain
relays.

Several of the relays in the 75/Milano have the same pin layout and the pins
are even numbered the same but, according to the workshop manual, the
internal circuitry of many of those relays is different.

I haven't found any guide in the manual to the relevant part numbers for
these relays either.

How do you know if a previous owner hasn't fitted the correct relay
somewhere?
