Changing rear pads on a Milano

I tried to change my rear brake pads on the Milano this weekend and ran into too many problems

1. On the outter part of the caliper on the passenager side I could get the locking nut to loosen holding the allen key in place.

2. The driver side caliper loosened up o.k., but it didn't seem like the piston was retracting at all!

Can anyone think of What I might of done wrong?  It the calipers frozen and I need to rebuild them?
