Yes its true. They tried to scuttle the ship and failed. The ship came up 
and the sailors were rescued. The ship was towed back to Chitown after 
citizens raised the quarter million dollars to cover the cost(it was 
wartime).

The ship is now at the museum of Science and Industry on Michigan ave. It 
sits raised on a dry platform supported by steel beams (like a mounted 
model).

I visited the ship and was allowed in. It is very cramped inside. I saw the 
captains quarters (enough to sleep 5) and the galley. The bridge was off 
limits. The most amazing part were the HUGE batteries they had in the thing 
to run the electrical systems. The ship runs on diesel.
