Sleepless in Lawrenceville

Hi Everybody,

First I am going to apologize for a long and confusing post. I just
finished watching the GP of Australia, yeah Ferrari! and I can't
sleep! All I think about are my Weber problems. If I look at one more
diagram of a DCOE I am going to cry!

My idling problem still persist and I have checked EVERYTHING. The car
runs fine on the Main Fuel circuit, but refuses to draw any fuel through
the idle jets. I verified all fuel and air passages part of the idle
circuit are free of obstruction. I raised and lowered both the float
level and Fuel pressure and still no idle.

The only thing I can think of is the following. When I received the
carbs, they came without any idle jets or idle jet holders. I ordered
idle jets and holders through fast Freddys in California. The Haynes
Weber calls for 55F17 idle jets for series 72/73 40 DCOEs. Fast Freddys
did not carry the F17 so I ordered F8 idle jets. F8s are supposed to be
a little richer. F8's have one less air correction than F17s.

I noticed when I spray gumout into the progression hole passages back to
the idle jet the fluid comes out around the threads at the top of the
idle jet holder. I'm thinking that when a vacuum is created to draw
fuel up into the idle jet and into the idle circuit. The vacuum instead
is being lost around the upper idle jet holder threads and just sucking
more air into the engine??? Hence no fuel to feed the idle circuit.

I noticed the idle jet holders have two sets of threads with mixtures
holes in between the threads that feed the idle circuit and progression
holes. The jet holders I have match exactly the picture in the Haynes
Weber Manual. But in the body of the carburetor there are only one set
of threads. The treads are below the hole that feeds the idle circuit.
The upper threads have nothing to screw into.

Does anyone know if Weber made different idle jet holders for the 40
DCOE series carburetors that Alfa uses or I am I barking up the wrong
tree?

This is weird, none of the 4 cylinders will idle and the only thing
different from the specs are the idle jets.

Does anybody have a set of idle jet holders so I can compare them to
mine??

Thanks In Advance,
Ralph DeLauretis
