FWIW, Alfa's new direct injection diesel has been getting absolute rave 
reviews form the motoring press.   can't find  the data, but I remember 
something like 1.9L, 135 hp, and vicinity of 200 '# of torque.  That's a fair 
amount of go power from 1.9L.  Also, supposed to be smooth & quiet.    
I guess if you work at a pigs ear long enough, you can make it into a silk 
purse.
