164 gearbox blowup info

Today i looked further into why my gearbox is now ventilated, it seems
that the diff. blew up and threw one of the bevel gears out in four
pieces. They were still in the diff housing so presumably they were
clanging about in there knocking bigger and bigger chunks out of the
casing.
Anybody know what the gearbox casing is made from so I can try welding
up the hole?
