Rough Idling '91 Spider

     As the owner of two '91 Spiders I can definately tell you that this is 
     not normal. Both of my cars purr away at 770-800 rpm at idle and never 
     miss a beat. I'd have the car checked out by another mechanic. You may 
     have a vacuum leak somewhere.
