Re: replacing power antenna stalk
Bruce--
The main part of your problem, where to find just the mast so that you don't
have to buy the whole unit, I can't help you with. One clue that I've picked
up on these things is that they tend to be almost generic, i.e. one mast will
fit many cars, depending on where the mfr sourced the equipment in the first
place. When you do get one, there is a trick to installation. Loosen and
remove the lock nut that holds the mast where it exits the car body. While
you are standing next to that location, have someone turn on the radio so
that the mast extends itself; with the lock nut off. The mast will extend
itself and just keep going right out of the car, and connected to it a
toothed, usually plastic, strip that mates to the gear inside of the motor.
Carefully observe which direction the teeth point in as they exit with the
mast- this is the way the new mast, with its toothed strip, will need to
point. Insert new mast (toothed strip first of course) in the correct
direction, have your assistant turn the radio off and allow the mast to
"feed" back into the car. Tighten the lock nut and you are done. I have never
done this on a 164 before so this could be all wet--but I doubt it. Don't
forget to maintain the mast, especially in the winter, by cleaning it every
couple of weeks with a mild detergent and applying a coat of WD-40. This will
help prevent the buildup that causes so many jammed and balky power antennae.
