As I've heard it a big part of the reason was the original spec for timing
belt replacement.  On the 164s they originally specified 50K Tbelt change
interval and then went back to 30K after lots of cars broke belts at 45K or
less.  I like the Centerline catalog spec myself - "30K or just before it
breaks".

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!
