GTV Wax

My 71 GTV is in the shop for paint right now, and my house is filled with
parts that will go back on the car.  I am in the process of polishing the
stainless steel trim.  The factory put a seal on the trim that looks like a
cross between wax and used chewing gum.  For those of you out there that
have removed, polished and reinstalled this trim, did you leave this mystery
seal on and polish around it?  Clean it off and leave it off?  Clean it off
and replace it with peanut butter?  It seems that it would be good to keep
vibrations down and keep water off the seams, but I don't know a suitable
substitution.  Thanks in advance.
