Chains

>>Chains generally *do not* stretch. They wear, little by little at ever=
y
working surface.<<

Most of the time true. Motorcycle drive chains are subject to plenty
of abuse (how many cam chains have to put up with 150hp being
transmitted through them), with a changing length as the suspension
moves and a nice combination of grit and lubricant to provide a
suitable grinding paste.

However. enclose chains are not the longest lived. I have had to replace
a motorcycle primary drive chain after 20000 miles, and that would make
a cam chain look like a very weak item.

Many years ago Honda almost destroyed their reputation by selling
bikes with major camchain problems. With the CX500 they even
managed to make a pushrod engine with a cam chain problem
which could cause failure before the first service.

All the best

Keith
