Rear Wheel studs on Milano/ Shock replacements

I just noticed that one of the wheel studs broke.  Do you have to pull the
hub to replace the stud?  Or, is there clearance to get a new stud in
without removal?  

Any input on shock replacements?  In central MA the roads are some of the
worse that I have encountered, however, I would like something that handles
auto-x...
