More Steering Questions

While going through steering wheel replacement hell last weekend, I
couldn't help wondering (or cursing) about the little "key" that keeps
the wheel properly aligned on the end of the steering column.  Previous
cars I've owned have a solid spline on the shaft.

Why is this little "key" a seperate piece, and WHY IS IT
SPRING-LOADED?!?  It's enough to make you crazy...

Is there a trick to holding the key in place while installing the
steering wheel?  Invariably, it would go flying out into the street at
the last minute.
