2600 Grille Heart

Hi there,
Has anyone on this list gone through the experiences and pitfalls of
restoring the diecast grille heart on their Alfa?
I'd appreciate any stories suggestions advice. My story so far: the grille
heart on my 2600 Sprint has been stripped of its chrome and has a hole that
shouldn't be there and a fine crack along the top. I've been told that
diecast is no good to replate as it can corrode any time from three days to
three years after replating even if its been copperplated. Someone else
tells me its fine and once welded by an expert can be restored to like new.
Yet another someone else tells me to go find a newly produced grille heart
that's been constructed of brass or copper. Is there such a thing?

All suggestions greatly appreciated,
