double clutching
Jorge asks: "...By the way, why exactly does double clutching work? (3rd,
clutch, neutral,
release and press clutch, 2nd gear (no crunch), release clutch and floor the
accelerator/gas.)"
Jorge, it works because the synchro is designed to match speeds of both the
input and output shafts. The output is connected to the drive wheels, but the
input is momentarily disconnected from the engine when the clutch is depressed.
What you forgot in your description above was to blip the throttle when in
neutral. This speeds up the input shaft, hopefully so that the speeds of the
shafts are equal. Since the synchro has no work to do, the gears slide easily
into place, and no crunch.
Try it, it works going into ANY forward gear, except from a dead stop.
Len, who though still Alfaless, wishes all Alfisti a happy new year.
