Alfetta GTV Rear Spring Rubbers?

Hello Alfisti,
What purpose do the rubber "buffers" perform on
Alfetta GTV (Sprint Veloce in the USA)? From a
parts book I saw yesterday, they are held in
position by a pressed metal frame and then
tied to the coil spring.

My guess is that they cushion the spring pads on the
de dion and body to prevent damage, and to reduce
noise. They are not available from any of my usual
sources Down Under.

Did the GTV6 have them?  Are they really necessary?
