I'm trying to persuade my wife to but an NSU R80, a 1971
Chevy Vega, or some other such atrocity to even out the maintenance
bills.

Citroen ID/DS. In spite of it being one of the most sophisticated
designs of any car made in excess of 1,000,000 units, you might be
disappointed that maintenance cost is not as high as some of these more
pedestrian vehicles.  On the other hand, it is a pretty practical car
for a family -- tons of space inside.
