Re: alfa-digest V7 #1194

Regarding Zachary Kator's questions about tachometer "redlines", the
Duetto 1600's had "redlines" of 6300rpm and the 1969 1750 had a
"redline" of 5700rpm. I haven't seen a 1750 with a 5200rpm "redline".

The major reason for lowering the "redline" is the increase in rotating
and reciprocating mass (and their effect on harmonics) associated with
the increase in engine displacement.

It's worth noting that the Alfa tach does not have an "absolute" single
"redline" but does show a "red zone" which should be avoided for
continuous operation on a stock engine. It's also worthy of note that
*any* tach (especially one that's 30 years old) should be calibrated
against a reliable "master" tachometer.

On Alfas, the tachs tend to show "low" readings the older they get and
the speedometers always read "high" so it all balances out....<Grin>
