Carlos Binns, using a hammer anywhere around an Alfa is not a good idea 
unless you're going to destroy the car.   If the battery is fully charged
you should have a positive starter solenoid engagement.  If not, it will
only click.  However, if the car has a couple of hundred thousand miles on
it, the brushes may be worn out.  Chances are the battery is weak or the
battery clamps are not tight enough.  No experience with proper car
maintenance?  Then have your expert ALFA technician work on your car.  Fred
