Sorry Alan, you got it wrong: in the Northern Hemisphere you need magnets
with a south pole at both ends. Amagnet with a north pole at both ends will
just slightly reinforces the surrounding geomagnetic field. 

A flux capacitor modified by Luigi Berkolooni works heaps better.
