Spica GTA's

As a child in the 60's i had the pleasure of accompanying my father to
various races, here in the states and also some in south america. In 1969,
we attended a race in Lima, Peru. this particular race was what whas
then/there called gran turismo. it was a motley mix of Abarths, Alfas,
Porsches, BMW's, Lotus Cortinas and a few outrageous mini cooper S's with
cutouts on the (tiny) hoods for the Weber intake trumpets. The 1, 2, & 3
cars were privateer Alfa GTA 1600's. It seems that some peruvians bought up
a bunch of these in the late 60's and had their own, private race series.
Most races were held at local airports. My father and i walked up to one of
the winning cars, i think it was #2, and talked to the owner/driver. He let
us sit in it, peer under the hood, admire the aluminium bits, and graciously
accepted an invitation to come race in chile the next season. i distinctly
remember the Spica unit and the huge, to my 8 year old eyes, intake
trumpets. back then the only other injected car on the track was a 2002 with
the kugelfischer unit, which retired early after a nasty shunt against the
tyre wall.
For what it's worth...
