Re: alfa-digest V7 #1140

In response to recent comments regarding trying to use a 1600 cc
cylinder head on a 1300 block someone remarked about the "serendipitous
discovery" that "going to the smaller valve sizes of the 1300 led to an
increase in power on the 1570 GTA......" This is absurdly incorrect.

The valve sizes were identical on the 1300 GTA Jr. and the 1600 GTA. As
a matter of fact, the cylinder heads and allied parts were completely
interchangeable. The later "small port" heads were preferable. Some
refining of the bevel at the perimeter of the combustion chamber was
essential if putting a 1300 head on a 1600 block as some "cheaters"
found to their dismay when their 1600 pistons didn't quite fit into the
1300 heads even though the cylinder bore sizes were also identical @ 78
mm. The "problem" there was caused by different piston crown designs.

The GTA Jr. was essentially just a "de-stroked" 1600 which used a
different piston design (there were several) from the 1600 and the
smaller port cylinder heads.

Just clarifying and correcting.....

Happy Holidays to all
