Spider heater fan

Hi folks:

Looking for a quick word of advice, if any, before I take out a second
mortgage to have someone strip out the interior on my Spider - my heater fan
suddenly stopped working one day recently. One day fine, the next nada,
except a strong smell of hot electrics - no surprise, I'm sure. The switch
still works fine, the dash lights work as normal (dim on slow, bright on
fast), which according to my wiring diagram implies some connection through
the motor is still working, and I can turn the fan with my fingers through
the floor vent, so I know it's not frozen. I took out the consoles this
weekend and couldn't find any loose connections. Number 4 fuse was blown,
but according to my wiring diagram this controls the cigar lighter; the fan
should be on Number 7. Either way, replacing the fuse didn't help. So I'm
off to get a new multimeter to make sure I'm getting power to the fan
terminals on the motor (now that I know how to get to them), but it sounds
like the fan motor just went kaput for no apparent reason. Since replacing
it means draining the a/c (which is beyond my abilities), I'm hoping there's
something obvious I've overlooked - but I can't think what it would be.

Any ideas?
