Right  idea, but reversed.  Having spent my misspent youth playing polo,the
near side is the left side of the horse--the side you climb on.  It's near
to you when you go to climb on the horse.  Near side shots in polo are much
harder than off side shots as the mallet being in your right hand you have
to reach over the left side of the horse to make your shot.
