David and Rick inquired about replacing / recovering
seats in a Spider. I would definitely recommend the
recovering route.
I took mine to the upholsterer and she was able to
replace the foam, cut the pattern from the old seat
material, and stitched everything together perfectly.
She even replaced a few springs. I requested nice
black cloth as the original vinyl got pretty hot in an
open convertible.
It is not original, but I am keeping the car forever,
or until some Expedition SUV yuppie flattens it while
talking on the cellphone about their next plastic
surgery.
I found that the price of recovering was less than new
seats.
The "new skin" slip-over material I have seen sold in
a couple of places never looks right when put over the
old seats. Getting the patterns and doing the job
myself was also an option when I was doing it. I
would, however, hurt myself if allowed to play with a
large needle.
So, the moral of the story is to support your local
craftsman before they starve and get replaced by a
CAD/ CAM upholstering robot.
