Stiff Pedal: Booster or check valve?

Got the sh*t scared out of me on the way to work this am! Coming to a stop 
sign I discovered a VERY stiff pedal on my '74 Spider.

What's the culprit and how shall I go about finding out?

How does one check a vacuum booster?

I'll assume if I can feel vacuum on the booster hose to the engine that the 
valve is ok.
