ian evans, Ditzler codes, &nbsp revisited

Ian Evans' praiseworthy efforts on our behalf got tripped-up yet again by his
scanner and/or OCR software, which did not separate two columns of text. The
text which came out as
"TECHEXCHANGE continued
        code. synthetic
enamel. Air-dry synthetic enamel "
(etcetera) actually reads, when divided into columns, as:
 (first column)
TECHEXCHANGE continued
code.
New types of paint have been introduced
by Alfa recently and it is important to know
this for a good match. Later paints can be
more lustrous, and certain types cannot be
applied over certain other types at all.
    Glassurit, DuPont, and Ditzler-PPG are
the finishes Alfa recommends. All new cars
sold here except GTVs and Berlinas with
(second column)
metallic (optional) colors bear oven-dried
synthetic enamel. Air dried synthetic enamel
should be used by body shops without baking
facilities, but is not entirely desireable.
Type 44 and type 46 acrylic is used
for metallic colors. The switch from type
44 to type 46 in the GTV production occur-
red between serial number 1532833 and
1532834; on the Berlina between 1557535
and 1557536.

(Then a following two column width note:)
Table B: Giulietta, Giulia, two-liter, and 2600 color codes (second
column) keyed to the Ditzler code (third column) used everywhere in the
United State,. A competent painter can mix any brand of auto paint if he has
the Ditzler codes.

(Then it goes into the color list, from Alfa Red to Indian Ivory, which is
more readily decipherable as it came through from Ian's scanner.)

Ian says "To recap the sheet seems to have come from a Ditzler factory rep,
so any credit or blame is due as appropriate." Fair guess, but not quite
correct.
The page which Ian has is the second page of a two-page article which
originally (?) appeared in "Alfanatics", the newsletter of the Capital
Chapter of the AROC (USA) sometime prior to 9/'77, which is the date of the
reprint I have from another newsletter, probably "Velocissima". The first
page contains a general explanation and a table of the then-current Alfa
color codes and DuPont paint codes for Alfa colors from AR008 China White
through AR827 Light Beige Metallic. Some of the content, about the switch
from type 44 to type 46, and recommended brands, is from an ARI Technical
Bulletin.

The truncated sentence which ended in "code" at the beginning of Ian's
transmission reads "On all cars delivered after June 1964 a decal on either
the firewall or underside of the trunk lid gives the original paint code".
The "KF" code numbers from Ian's list went out of current use no later than
that.

Hope this eases the confusion somewhat - -
