164 brakelights again

It's probably the stop lamps relay located under/behind the bottom of the
glovebox on a sturdy metal bracket. Unfortunately there are several other
relays there. On my 91 the stop lamp relay was opaque white plastic, others
have reported different colours such as black ( I think). Easy DIY
replacement. The part is the usual ridiculous cost for such an unreliable
component (Roberto Bosch again, probably assembled in Brazil or Madagascar).

My diagnostic procedure involves applying the foot brake to bring the
vehicle to a complete stop, then contorting myself so that I can thump the
dash padding immediately below the glovebox. This apparently jarred the
relays so the dash lights went out. Having an observer check for the rear
lights popping on would be helpful. Having a third person apply the brakes
while you go banging or thumping or otherwise investigating the location of
the relay would be better. Maybe that's why repairing ALFAs is so
expensive, up to three mechanics may be required for even simple operations!

BTW, all you 164 owners, there is an excellent Alfa 164 website with reams
of info such as this at www.digest.net
the path name is www.digest.net/alfa/FAQ/164/index.html. I'd check there
first as you'll be able to find all of the possible causes for your strange
symptoms in one place instead of getting umpteen different replies on this
very useful BB, which you will have to search for.
