The only difference between DIN and SAE numbers are the "ideal" running
conditions, which are the adjustments to the actual numbers run on a given
dynamometer. There's also EWG, ISO, and JIS correction factors. Not much
different.
There are other factors- gross, brake, net, indicated, etc. POWER.
Remember, hp is an "Imperial" unit, while the better unit is kW.
brake ~ net = fully dressed engine (powering all accessories, and proper
exhaust system/ back pressure), what comes out of the crank
indicated = brake + friction, which, ideally, is what the gas is trying to
put into the crank.
Gross= well, whatever the manuf. wants- typically no accessories, and a
perfect exhaust system.
You'll mostly see brake ("b"hp) numbers, as that is now the official
recording standard. Now the standard from some rather optimistic gross
numbers....
SAE- North America, DIN- German, JIS- Japanese, ISO- rest of Europe (I
think) and no idea about EWG.
Most of this is noted from the 3rd edition of the Bosch Automotive Handbook.
