Re: ANZA Exhaust Experience

Perhaps one of the reasons why Diane's ANZA exhaust failed is because of
her long term storage technique. If you briefly start it up every now and
then when in storage,
the combination of the rich fuel mixture and the water condensate in the
system creates in a weak acid that then slowly attacks the metal.

If you insist on starting the engine periodically while in storage, you
should run it long enough to lean out the mixture (i.e. at op temp) and
evaporate the moisture in the exhaust system. Best bet would be at ~2500
RPM for at least 15 minutes.

But the best way to store the car over the winter is to remove the plugs,
squirt a little oil is each cylinder, turn the engine over a couple of
times by hand and replace the plugs finger tight. Then disconnect and
pull the battery, put it on a trickle charger and then change the oil and
filter. I have had ANZA on my '75 Spider for years and found it to be a
well designed and durable product with an absolutely beautiful Alfa
sound!

PS: If you spin out and land in a ditch, how can you reasonably fault the
exhaust system if it breaks in a couple of places and possibly damages
the headers in the process? Sometimes you have to pay a price for the joy
of "spirited" driving.
