It is a pretty normal complaint but some things to minimize it. 
Disconnect the thermal timing retard.  Purple wire on the thermostat
housing.  This should have been done already but maybe not so check (EPA
approved this fix in 1987).  Set timing correctly.  Advanced timing make
it worse.  Some more questionable ideas are to tweek the air flow meter
richer, and or make the thermo sensor read a lower temp ie. add series
resistance.  Just enough to richen a cold engine without changing the
warm engine much.
