 In addition to the hefty rebate program offered by the Italian government =
 to get old cars off the road (as mentioned by an earlier poster), I =
 believe that at 10 years of age, cars must pass a fairly rigorous =
 inspection program.  Usually, the cost of getting the car to pass the =
 inspection can't be justified and the car is junked (or de-nationalized =
 and sold to American servicemen ;) )

YES Dan you are right the government  help in the last couple years 
with the incentives + like you are seeing  the inspection is don from the 
motor vehicles
not from a gas station like here you must take the car after 10 years from 
the first day the whose register the first time, after that is 5 years to 
pass the motor vehicles inspect same time is not easy and you better of crash 
the car especial if the have any incentive to do so
keep in Mine the  no one drive at 55 mph in Italy you get run over at that 
speed  so the car most be in good conditions and +is just  a way of life to 
have a new car 
and go in vacation  here we put so much priority in owning a house  in Italy 
they don't  and they bay new cars.
i nice 166 in Italy you need 60.000.000  di lire
