I tried this some time ago as I was getting the same symptoms. The mounting
plate on the collar of the switch shaft is keyed, and is of the "push,
twist, click" variety. Unfortunately the plastic seems to become brittle
with age, so that the reverse procedure is more likley to be of the "push,
twist, snap!" scenario!

You may well find, as I did, that the switch contacts are worn and not just
dirty. I would probably try to spray some contact cleaner "in situ" and see
if this solves the problem before trying to remove the switch. I managed to
get a few extra months out of mine before replacement but the contacts were
quite burnt. Be warned! there are 3 different part numbers for replacements
(yours will no doubt be the most expensive... mine was!) so check that you
are ordering the correct one for your year (around AU $50 I think)

Good Luck
