115 charging problem

The charging system on my '74 GTV isn't working. I verified this by
checking the voltage out of the alternator, it's about 12.5V with the engine
off or on at any RPM. I've check mechanically the underhood connections to
the alternator and voltage regulator and don't suspect a problem there. I'm
looking for advice on how to isolate the problem to the regulator or
alternator if indeed that is where it lies. Is there a test that may be
performed with a volt-ohm meter to isolate the location of the failure?

Some history of the problem may also be useful for anyone trying to diagnose
this problem for me before I call Car Talk ;^). At my last track event the
battery leaked acid out the top. I suspect this was due to over charging.
The battery, located in the trunk, was quite warm and bubbling a lot. After
cleaning up the mess and replacing the battery I found 17V from the
alternator at 2K RPM! I disconnected the 3 wires between the alternator and
regulator to finish the event and drove home. Now when I hook things back
up,... nothing.
