At least here in MA, filling up a '74 GTV can be a chore as well.  I
don't have a perfect solution yet, but a few hints might help.  The
problem seems to be that the filler neck is too steep for modern US
pumps, and there isn't sufficient clearance with the bodywork.  Tips:
1 -- Avoid stations with the large bellows vapor recovery systems.  The
simpler shield types are easier to slip past the body.
2 -- Don't try to get the nozzle all the way into the filler neck.  If
you pump slowly, you can get away with it only about halfway in.  
3 -- Don't use full serve places.  It's tricky enough that the attendant
usually gets gas all over the car or can't pump it or something, and
you'll end up out there anyway.
