Stop lamp relay unit under the glove box (glove tray for the UK audience)
will show these symptoms when it fries itself. Two warning lights
illuminate on the dash suggesting dire faults with brakes or lights or
whatever. Tough to diagnose accurately. Check all bulbs and fuses first. If
all the rear brakelights fail to illuminate on one side or the other and
the bulbs are ok then suspect the relay and try replacing it. I just
thumped the padding below the glove box and theb lights on the dash went
out and the previously dead brakelights went on. Duh, must be the relay.

Don't ask me why Alfa has such a part in the car, they just do.
